Consequences du cycle de mue et d'intermue sur la morphologie fonctionnelle des pars molaris des Crustaces Peracarides. ArchiMer
Saudray, Yves.
The anatomy of the masticatory part of the mandible (the pars molaris) has been studied throughout the moult/intermoult cycle in some peracacarid crustacean species, by scanning electron microscopy. Species examined were: Ligia oceanica, Sphaeroma serratum, Idotea balthica, Talitrus saltator, Hyale nilssoni, Gammarid amphipoda and the mysid Pranus flexuosus. Feeding is known to decline near moulting; this may be because the chewing surfaces become loosened before moulting. Also the surfaces are worn down and useless, and feeding ceases. Very long intermoult periods, as found in old individuals, may thus cause long periods of starvation and this could enhance the symptoms of senescence.

Evolution of Blennioidel in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Zander, C. Dieter.
The evolution of 2 spp belonging to the gen Tripterygion and some spp of the gen Blennius is discussed. Tripterygion tripteronotus and T. xanthosoma have very similar morphological characters yet live in 2 distinct niches. This probably results from 2 separate immigrations into the Mediterranean at different eras after the glacial age. After establishing reproductive barriers these populations would have evolved into 2 distinct spp. In contrast the spp of the gen Blennius were endemic in the Mediterranean and their evolution must have taken place after the end of the glacial age. During this lapse of time, multiple differentiations which might have taken place would account for the presence of sibling spp having comparable morphological characters but...

Etude morphologique du loup Dicentrarchus labrax L. de la region de Sete ArchiMer
Barnabe, Gilbert.
Sampling of a population of D. Labrax was one with spear diving catches. Morphometric and meristic data were used to calculate a biometric index. This index showed that all the bass of the Sete area belong to Dicentrarchus labrax, even if they were black spotted on the upper part of the body. Morphology was slightly different according to sex, but sex determination was not always possible using morphometric data. This inshore population shows some morphological characteristics (branchiospine and lateral line scale number) different from the data collected on the same sp along the Maroc Atlantic coast by Gravier, 1961.

Morphology and Ontogeny of Histiostomatid Mites (Acari: Astigmata) associated with Cattle Dung in the Netherlands Naturalis
Bongers, M.G.H.; Oconnor, B.M.; Lukoschus, F.S..
Collections of histiostomatid mites from cattle dung and/or dung inhabiting insects from various localities in the Netherlands yielded 5 species which were cultured in the laboratory to obtain all ontogenetic stages. Descriptions are given for all stages in the life-cycles of Histiostoma brevimanus and Myianoetus simplex, species previously known only from deutonymphs, and Aphodanoetus teinophallus, gen. nov., spec. nov. A neotype is designated for H. brevimanus. Ontogenetic character transformations are described for two other species, Histiostoma phyllophorum and Rhopalanoetus fimetarius, species in which only deutonymphs and adults were previously described.

Comparative studies in Chelicerata IV. Apatellata, Arachnida, Scorpionida, Xiphosura Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of four chelicerate classes: Apatellata (Solifugae and Pseudoscorpionida), Arachnida s. str. (both groups of Uropygi, i.e. Holopeltida and Schizomida, Amblypygi and Araneida), Scorpionida and Xiphosura. Methods, principles and terminology, adopted in this paper, correspond with those of parts I -111 of the present series of comparative studies in Chelicerata. Special attention is paid to segmentation of the body, respiratory organs, orifices of coxal glands, mouthparts, and appendages. The evolution of these structures is studied, and the relationships of the chelicerate classes and subclasses are reinvestigated and discussed.

Interpretação morfológica de Musa rosacea Jacq. (Musaceae): fase teleomática Acta Botanica
Alquini,Yedo.

Lassus, Patrick; Bardouil, Michele.
A dinoflagellate belonging to Protogonyaulax genera and forming more than 20 cells chains was observed from November 1987 to February 1988 in Vilaine Bay and in the west ofIle d'Yeu (France). This species was not detected in coastal phytoplankton during preceding surveys. Close to Protogonyaulax affinis it seems to be a winter developing species for this coastal area. Vertical distribution shows in december a migration of the patch towards deeper layers. Increasing occurrences of species belonging to Protogonyaulax (Alexandrium Balech) genera inshore or coastal waters need to pay more attention to the taxonomy of such organisms. Some species are effectively well known as poisons producers.

Morphology, Ecology and Biogeography of the South American Caecilian Chthonerpeton Indistinctum (Amphibia: Gymnophiona: Typhlonectidae) Naturalis
Gudynas, E.; Williams, J.D.; Mercedes Azpelicueta, M. de las.
This study of Chthonerpeton indistinctum (Reinhardt & Lütken, 1861) considers 25 morphometric characters, teeth-counts and sex, based on 96 specimens. A multivariate analysis of characters and comparisons of geographically arranged samples is carried out by graphic and statistical methods. No trends in geographical variation were found. Subsequently a redescription of the species is presented, including measurements and counts. Sexual dimorphism was observed for four characters related to the cloacal region. The results are discussed and compared with previous reports. Character-variation is also studied. Primary annuli counts show very low variation; sample variation profiles were similar for the remaining characters. A revision of biological data...

Antennule development during copepodite phase of some representatives of Harpacticoida (Copepoda, Crustacea) Naturalis
Dahms, Hans-Uwe.
The copepodite antennule development of representatives of 6 harpacticoid families is studied and discussed in detail and that of 8 genera of harpacticoids from 7 families is schematically illustrated. Twenty-seven genera out of 17 harpacticoid families are compared on the basis of own investigations and data from the literature. The origin of newly formed segments can be determined by seta numbers of segments, relative segment length, furrows indicating previous articulations and by the position of the segment which bears the proximal aesthetasc. There are 2 zones of segment formation, both located in the middle part of the first antenna. Normal segment formation takes place distally from the second, aesthetasc-bearing segment from C I to C II and...

Genetic differentiation in Gammarus fossarum and G. caparti (Crustacea, Amphipoda) with reference to G. pulex pulex in northwestern Europe Naturalis
Scheepmaker, Maarten; Dalfsen, Jan van.
Genetic differentiation among G. fossarum Koch, 1835 from different stations in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and northern France, and the closely related Belgian form G. caparti Pètre-Stroobants, 1980 was investigated by electrophoresis at 20 enzyme loci. Although morphologically variable, geographically distant populations of G. cf. fossarum were hitherto considered conspecific. In the present study, populations of G. cf. fossarum and G. caparti were examined with reference to G. pulex pulex as an estimate for genetic differentiation at the species level. With G. p. pulex as a standard, genetic differentiation among geographically distant populations of G. cf. fossarum is occasionally observed at species level. The populations of G. caparti studied were...

Phylogeny of the subfamilies of the family Braconidae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonoidea) Naturalis
Quicke, D.L.J.; Achterberg, C. van.
A phylogenetic analysis of the subfamilies of the family Braconidae Nees, 1812 is presented. The analysis employing 96 phylogenetically informative characters was performed using the computerized parsimony programmes PAUP and Hennig86. The cladograms obtained show that the Braconidae can be divided into three major groups of subfamilies. These are a lineage comprising the mainly ectoparasitic cyclostomes and relatives, and two advanced endoparasitic groups, both apparently derived from somewhere near the endoparasitic cyclostome subfamily Rogadinae Foerster, 1862 sensu stricto. As a result of the phylogenetic analysis subfamily rank is given to the Exothecinae Foerster, 1862 (including the Hormiini Foerster, 1862), the Rhyssalinae Foerster, 1862 (including...
